John and Patrick Culbertson and their descendants

Much of the Culbertson information comes from Culbertson (1923), pages 424-436. There are no site-specific sources. In his preface, Lewis Culbertson lists the following sources for his book: family bible records, will, deeds, settlements to sale bills, inventories, tax records, U. S. census records of 1790 and in some instances 1800, pension records, land grants, Congressional records, State land grants, State archives, Colonial and Revolutionary War and historical works, and in some instances county histories. However, in most sections, there are no additional mention of these sources.

The information on the McFate family associated with our lines comes mainly from "The history of the McFate family," by Robert W. McFate, 1888 (see References) and Robert McFate and his descendants in western Pennsylvania, by Frank J. McFate, Margaret McFate and William Brown, 1982, pages 1–17, 67–87, and 102–123; published in Crawford County Genealogy by the Crawford County Genealogical Society, 1982. Additions came mainly from the federal censuses and Marlene Burkheimer. Marlene Burkheimer credits her sources, besides her own, to Joseph Robert McFate who lives in Clearwater, Florida. Other additions were from Roy W. Smith (1972) and my information on McFates, Jamisons, Lytles and Culbertsons. The Roy W. Smith information, written in 1972, was received from Mark E. Roche, Historian of the Cochranton (Wayne Township, Crawford County) Heritage Society. Mark Roche informed me Mr. Smith was physically challenged with polio and spent much of his life compiling information on many early families. Roy W. Smith died in 1996 at age 92.

Francis Culbertson, brother of Mary (Culbertson) McClintock (#12), was in Venango County by 1800. Perhaps he came with, or at least at about the same time as, the McClintocks. As known for the McClintocks, our Culbertsons can be traced to what is present–day Perry County, Pennsylvania, and before that to Chester County, Pennsylvania. Unlike the McClintocks, however, there were other early Culbertsons in Venango County, especially in the south of Venango County, that can not be associated with our Culbertsons. Our early Culbertsons were closely associated with McFates, many of whom were known to have come to North America from County Donegal, in the north of Ireland, but part of present–day Republic of Ireland. Perhaps County Donegal was also the ancestral home of some of our Culbertsons.

1. UNKNOWN1 PARENTS of Patrick and John Culbertson. I have no information on the parents or other ancestors of the brothers Patrick and John Culbertson. One would suspect they were from the north of Ireland. They would still have been alive in circa 1745, the time of Patrick’s birth. Perhaps Patrick and John Culbertson had a sister Jane Culbertson who married Joseph McFate.897 Culbertson (1923), page 436, mentions that he has no evidence that John Culbertson (Patrick’s brother) was from Delaware, but alludes to John being the son of John Culbertson, Sr., of St. Georges Hundred (K. K. in Section Third), Delaware.

Children of unknown Culbertson parents include:

+ 2 i. John2 Culbertson, died circa 1825–1826; married Mary McClintock.
+ 3 ii. Patrick Culbertson, (direct line ancestor of the author), born circa 1745; died 1818 in Venango County, Pennsylvania; married Jane McClintock, sister of Mary (McClintock) Culbertson (#2).
