34. MARGARET5 MILLER (Jane4 McFate, Jane3, John2, Unknown1); born circa 1820 in Pennsylvania; died 5 August 1904; buried in Miller Farm Cemetery; married GEORGE SHREVE (son of James and Catherine Berry Shreve), born 20 January 1816 in Pennsylvania; died 16 February 1899; buried in Miller Farm Cemetery.1044

George Shreve was a brother of Samuel Shreve who married Sarah Ann Fleming, daughter of Andrew and Jane (McClintock) Fleming—see #9 of “Flemings” and also #14 of “Notes on Shreves”section in The Oil Creek Flemings of Venango County, Pennsylvania, with related families, Volume 2. In 1850 and 1870, George and Margaret and family were enumerated in Cherrytree Township, Venango Company.1045 In 1863, George and Margaret Shreve sold land in Cherrytree Township for $500 to A. D. Atkinson (who later bought the John S. Fleming farm—see #27 of “Flemings”), reserving one–twentieth interest in oil wells “if any are to be found.”1046 In 1900, Margaret was living with her son George Shreve in Cherrytree Township, Venango County.1047

In the 1860 Allegheny Township census, Mary Shreve was living with her grandmother Jane (McFate) Miller and Jane's son Robert Miller. In 1880, Thomas (a farmer), Mary Jane, and son Hugh were living in Cherrytree Township, Venango County. 1050

Shreve; born February 1840 in Pennsylvania,1051 died 1910; buried in Mumford Chapel Cemetery, Crawford County; married Belle Lytle, born 1857; died 30 December 1910.1052 Belle and James were first cousins, Belle being a daughter of John and Nancy (Miller) Lytle, see also #132 of the Lytle web site. James lived in Calvins Corner, Crawford County, Pennsylvania. No children were listed for them in the 1900 federal census, when James was listed as a farmer.1053

NANCY5 MILLER (Jane4 McFate, Jane3, John2, Unknown1); born circa 1823; died 2 July 1891; buried in Mumford Chapel Cemetery;1056 married JOHN LYTLE, born circa 1822; died 4 January 1886; buried in Mumford Chapel Church, Crawford County. John was a child of William and Isabella (McFate) Lytle, Isabella being a sister of Jane (McFate) Miller; hence Nancy and John’s marriage was a first cousin marriage. William Lytle [Jr.], was a son of William Lytle who was a brother of John Lytle (#3 and #4 of the Lytle web site.

JANE5 MILLER (Jane4 McFate, Jane3, John2, Unknown1); born circa 1826 in Pennsylvania; died by 1894; married 20 October 1852 in Neilltown, Harmony Township, now Forest County, Pennsylvania, MILLER WILSON, born 1830 in Centre County, Pennsylvania.1057 Miller Wilson, a son of Nathaniel and Elizabeth (Davidson) Wilson, was a merchant (and early apiculturist) in Neilltown but later farmed in Cherrytree Township.1058 In 1850,1059 Miller Wilson was enumerated in Cherrytree Township with his mother, Elizabeth Wilson, born circa 1798, and siblings Sally Wilson, born circa 1828, Harvey Wilson, born circa 1833, Rebecca Wilson, born circa 1836, Margaret Wilson, born circa 1837, and Alexander Wilson, born circa 1839. In 1852, when he married Jane Miller, Miller Wilson was listed as residing in Warren County. In 1870, the family was enumerated in Cherrytree Township, at which time Miller’s mother, Elizabeth, and his sister Sarah Miller, were living with them, as was a ?Gertmas Wilson, “niece.”1060

Miller Wilson was born in Warren County, Pa., in 1830. In 1848 he came to Venango County and located in Cherrytree Township. He was married to Miss Jane Miller, October 20th 1852. Settled on land they now live on, then wild and uncleared, but now they have fifty acres under a good state of cultivation. He follows farming and manufactures bee-hives to sell, and engages in bee culture. They have five children.

Mr. Register, In compliance with a late act of our legislature, I forward to you as therein directed this following marriage certificate. I hereby certify that I married Mr. Miller Wilson, a white man, son of Nathaniel and Elizabeth Wilson, a farmer, born and residing in Warren Co., Pa., to Miss Jane Miller, a white girl, daughter of James and Jane Miller, born and residing in Venango County on the 20th of Oct., at Dr. John Wilson’s and before several respectable witnesses in Neillsville, Venango Co. M.A. Parkinson, Presbyterian minister in Neillsville, Pa.

  108 ii. John L. Wilson; born September 1855 in Pennsylvania; married Henrietta Tarr, born December 1859 in Pennsylvania; she was a daughter of Edward and Nancy Ann (Duncan) Tarr. In 1900, 1910, and 1920 John and Henrietta, no children, were living in Titusville, Pennsylvania, where John was listed as a driller.1064 Also in the household in 1900 was John’s brother Robert C. Wilson, divorced, (also enumerated as a driller), and Erel (?) [Edna?] Wilson, nephew, born November 1884 in Pennsylvania. I suspect he was the son of Robert C. and wife Maude (Tarr), now divorced. Also in the household in 1920 was Edna Tarr, bor circa 1900 in Pennsylvania, niece.

  110 iv. Robert Calvin Wilson; born May 1860 or 1861 in Pennsylvania; married Maude Lovisa Tarr, born August 1863 in Pennsylvania; she was a daughter of George Washington and Adelia Ann (Rose) Tarr. By 1900, Robert and Maude had divorced and Maude was living with her widowed mother in Cherrytree Township, Venango County.1065 Maude died in Michigan and is buried in Cherrytree Presbyterian Church Cemetery, Venango County, Pennsylvania. Maude was listed as having one living child in 1900, but the child was not living with Maude.1066 I suspect the ?Erel Wilson was her child, who in 1900 was living with his father, Robert C. in the household of Robert’s brother John L. Wilson.
  111 v. Mark McClelland Wilson; born June 1862 in Pennsylvania; married 28 September 1888 Laura Melvina Stevenson, born February 1870 in Pennsylvania; she was a daughter of George W. and Elizabeth Stevenson of Cherrytree Township, Venango County, Pennsylvania. In 1888, both Mark, listed as a tool dresser, and Elizabeth were living in Cherrytree Township.1067 In 1900 and 1910 the family was still in Cherrytree Township, where Mark was enumerated as a driller.1068 Laura’s father, George W. Stevenson, born October 1836 in Pennsylvania, was living with the family in 1900.1069 In 1920, Mark, Laura and family were in Titusville, Ward 3, where Mark was listed as a driller (page 5A). In 1930, Mark was still enumerated as a driller when the family was in Meadeville, Pennsylvania.(page 5A).

40. ROBERT5 NEILL (Mary4 McFate, Jane3 , John2, Unknown1); born 29 October 1823 [circa 1828];1071 married MARGARET [—?—], born circa 1830. Robert was not mentioned as an heir of his mother, Mary Neill, in the 1860 quit claim document pertaining to the heirs of Robert McFate (#12). In 1860, Margaret and children Mary and Frank were living in Allegheny Township, Venango County (page 39), with Thomas Neill, age 1?, listed as head of household.

  116 i. Anna6 Stella Neill; born 3 August 1862, in Moon Township, Beaver County, Pennsylvania; died 18 April 1918 in Texas; married Aaron M. Kratzer. This family lived in the Duke Center, Otto Township, McKean County, Pennsylvania, area.

46. ROBERT5 W. MCFATE (Joseph4 McFate, Jane3, John2, Unknown1); born 25 April 1834 in Pennsylvania; married 12 April 1864 HULDA J. RICKETTS, born 3 July 1835 in Pennsylvania. She was a daughter of James and Jane (McCalmont) Ricketts of Cornplanter Township. Robert operated a general store in Cochranton, Crawford County, Pennsylvania.1075 Robert W. McFate was author of "History of the McFate Family" (1888).

In 1870, Robert, Hulda and children Joseph V. and Margaret were living in Cochranton, Crawford County, Pennsylvania, where Robert W. was listed as a retired dry goods merchant. The family (all four children listed) was still in Cochranton. where Robert was listed as a merchant. For this census, Hulda was enumerated as Jennie H. McFate. In 1900, Robert W., Hulda and children Lee and Clare were living in New Castle, Ward 2, Lawrence County, Pennsylvania; no occupation was listed for Robert in 1900. Also living in the household in 1900 was Wylie McCaslin, attorney, single, born June 1869 in Pennsylvania. By 1910, Robert had died. Hulda was living her son J. Lee McFate and his family in 1910 and 1920. In 1930, Hulda, age 94, was living with her married daughter Margaret Prather in Ellery Township, Chautauqua County, New York (page 2B).

  118 ii. Margaret Evelyn McFate; born 8 May 1869; married John M. Prather; born 21 November 1866 in Pennsylvania. In 1920, Margaret and John were living in Jamestown, Ward 1, New York (page 9A), where John was enumerated as a real estate agent. In 1930, Margaret, widow, was living in Ellery Township, Chautauqua County, New York (page 2B). With her in 1930 was her mother Hulda McFate.
  119 iii. James Lee McFate; (called Lee); born 30 May 1871; married Esther Naylor Ray; born 7 December 1874; died 27 March 1930. In 1900, Lee, single and living with his parents, was enumerated as Chief of Police (presumably for New Castle, Pennsylvania). By 1910, Lee had married and was living in Union Township, Lawrence County, Pennsylvania (page 4A), where Lee was listed as a proprietor of a candy store. Also living in with the family in 1910 was Lee's mother, Hulda, and Esther's father, Robert M. Ray, born circa 1844 in West Virginia. In 1920, Lee, Esther and and family were in New Castle, Ward 2 (page 19A), where Lee was listed as a wholesale merchant, confectionary. Esther's father, Robert, was still with the family in 1920.
  120 iv. John Clare McFate; born 30 November 1873. Clare, single, was living with his parents in 1900.


47. DAVID5 H. MCFATE (Joseph4 McFate, Jane3, John2, Unknown1); born 16 January 1836 in Pennsylvania; died 4 April 1908; buried in Cochranton Cemetery;1077 married MARGARET MCFATE, born 25 December 1830 in Ireland; died 24 January 1922; buried in Cochranton Cemetery.1078 Margaret was a daughter of Robert and Elizabeth (Black) McFate.

The family lived in East Fairfield Township, Crawford County, Pennsylvania, where David was a farmer in 1880 (page 135) and 1900 (page 3B). By 1910, David had died, and Margaret was living with her married son Frank J. McFate.

+   122 ii. Francis (Frank) McFate; born 1 April 1867 in East Fairfield Township, Crawford County; died 26 May 1950; married Margaret Carson; born circa 1882 in Ireland. In 1910, Frank, Margaret, and Frank's mother, Margaret, were living in East Fairfield Township, Crawford County, Pennsylvania, where Frank was farming (page 10 A). The family was still in East Fairfield Township in 1920 (page 11B) and 1930 (page 1B). Also still with the family in 1920 was Frank's mother, Margaret.

48. JOHN5 G MCFATE (Joseph4 McFate, Jane3, John2, Unknown1); born 16 December 1837 in Pennsylvania; died 1920; buried in Cochranton Cemetery; married 14 January 1866 ELIZABETH BURCHFIELD;1079 born circa 1843 in Pennsylvania.

In 1880, John G., Elizabeth and family were living in Hempfield Township, Mercer County, Pennsylvania, where John was enumerated as a farmer (census page 132). By 1900, Elizabeth had died, and John G., widower, and children were living in Greenville, Mercer County, Pennsylvania, where John was still listed as a farmer (page 4B). In 1910, John was living with his married daughter Mary M. and husband John Cutter in Greenville, Pennsylvania (page 8A).

Children of John G. and Elizabeth (Burchfield) McFate:

  125 i. Anna 6 McFate; born circa 1866; probably died young.
  126 ii. Howard C. McFate; born 17 July 1869 in Pennsylvania; married Lena A. [—?—]; born August 1872 in Illinois. In 1900, Howard, Lena and children Mary and John were living with Howard's widowed father and some of Howard siblings in Greenville, Mercer County, Pennsylvania, where Howard was listed as a railroad clerk. In 1910, the family had moved to Duquesne, Ward 2, Allegheny County, Pennsylvania, where Howard was enumerated as a clerk in a ?retread company (page 7A). Howard died before the 1920 federal census, and Lena, widow, and son Robert P. were living in Bethelehem, Ward 1, Pennsylvania, where Lena was listed as doing school service work (page 5B). In 1930, Lena M. was living with her married daughter Elizabeth, Elizabeth's husband Rufus J. Wysor and their children in Brentwood, Allegheny County, Pennsylvania (page 32B).
Children of Howard and Lena (McFate) Wysor:
(a) Elizabeth Mary McFate; born April 1895 in Colorado; married Rufus J. Wysor; born 8 December 1885 in Virginia; died July 1967; last residence: Sea Island, Glynn County, Georgia. Rufus Wysor was a son of Henry C. and Mary E. Wysor, who lived in Pulaski County, Virginia. In 1920, Rufus and family were in Sparrows Point, Baltimore. Maryland, where Rufus J. was enumerated as a salesman for a steel works (page 1B). In 1930, the family had moved to Brentwood, Allegheny County, Pennsylvania (page 32B), where Rufus was listed as a vice president of a steel corporation. Also with the family in 1930 was Lena McFate, widow, mother of Elizabeth.
Children of Rufus and Elizabeth (McFate) Wysor known from the federal censuses (all born in Pennsylvania): (i) Jennie M. Wysor; (ii) Carolyn C. Wysor; and (iii) Rufus J. Wysor, Jr.

Rufus J. Wysor [Sr.] eventually became President of the Republic Steel Corporation, founded in Youngstown, Ohio. At one time Republic was said to be the third largest steel company in the United States. As one would expect, Rufus's business responsibilities and civil duties were widespread. Here is his obituary appearing in Time Magazine, posted Friday, 23 June 1967, online edition.
Died. Rufus Wysor, 81, a metallurgist who became president of Republic Steel in 1937, directing the company's wartime expansion, then resigned in 1945 to take on the formidable task of planning the revival of Germany's shattered steel industry, later went to Japan from 1947 to 1948 to do much the same job as a private consultant; of Parkinson's disease; at Sea Island, Ga.

McFate, born 23 July 1902 in Pennsylvania;; (tentative) died October 1978; last residence: Dallas, Texas; Social Security Number issued in Illinois; (tentative) married Joan [—?—]; born 20 April 1909 in England; died 29 March 1989; last residence: United States Consulate, Canada; Social Secuity Number issued in Illinois. In 1930, Robert P. and Joan were living in Chicago, Cook County, Illinois, where Robert was enumerated as a chemical engineer, University (page 8B); the name was spelled MacFate in this census as was his name in the Social Security Death Index.
  127 iii. Percy E. McFate; born 20 December 1871 in Pennsylvania; died 20 July 1872.
  128 iv. Cornell R. McFate; born 8 October 1872 in Pennsylvania.
  129 v. Legrande McFate; born 26 March 1874 in Pennsylvania; died 19 September 1895.
  130 vi. Lapierre (Wilmot) McFate; born 14 March 1875 in Pennsylvania; married Minnie B. Shaeffer, born 16 May 1876 in Pennsylvania. In 1910, Wilmot L. and Minnie, no children listed, were living in Canton, Ward 1, Stark County, Ohio, where Wilmot was enumerated as a bookkeeper in a steel mill. In 1920, W. L. and Minnie were still in Canton, Ward 7, where Wilmot was listed as a manager, invoice department, Mill.
  131 vii. Mary E. McFate; born 10 January 1879 in Pennsylvania; married John D. Cutter, born 28 May 1868 in Ohio. In 1910, John, Mary and Mary’s father, John G. McFate, widower, were living in Greenville, Pennsylvania, where John Cutter was enumerated as a train master, railroad.1080 In 1920, John D. and Mary were living in Washington, D. C. where John was enumerated as a major in the Army (page 2A).

SARAH5 ANN MCFATE (Joseph4 McFate, Jane3, John2, Unknown1); born 4 October 1839 in Pennsylvania; died 2 October 1864,1081 buried in Plumer Cemetery, Cornplanter Township, Venango County, Pennsylvania;1082 married a second cousin, MARK WARD, born 9 April 1837 in Oakland Township, Venango County; died 13 September 1896 in North Shenango Township, Crawford County. Sarah Ann McFate was the first wife of Mark Ward, who was a son of Mark and Nancy (McFate) Ward. See under Mark Ward (#59) for the child of Mark and Sarah Ann (McFate) Ward.
