In 1880, Thomas (a farmer), Mary Jane, and son Hugh were living in Cherrytree Township, Venango County, Pennsylvania.1160
102. GEORGE6 A. SHREVE (Margaret5 Miller, Jane4 McFate, Jane3, John2, Unknown1); born April 1848 in Pennsylvania; still alive in 1932; buried in Jamison Corners Cemetery (Cherrytree Township);1161 married ELIZABETH JANETTE JAMISON (daughter of Robert and Susan Gerow Jamison, see #77 of “Jamisons” in Volume 2 of The Oil Creek Flemings and related families), born 12 June 1850 in Cherrytree Township, Venango County, Pennsylvania; died 1937; buried in Jamison Corners Cemetery. In 1900, George Shreve1162 and Elizabeth and family and mother Margaret Shreve were living in Cherrytree Township; George was enumerated as a farmer. George, Elizabeth and children Susan and Adeline were still in Cherrytree Township in 1910.1163 In 1920 (census page 8A) and 1930 (page1B), daughter Adaline Armagost (divorced) and her children, were living with George and Janette in Cherrytree Township. George Shreve was alive in 1932 and attended a Jamison family reunion— see #84 in Jamison web site.
Note the age difference between William (born 1873) and the children born in the early 1890s. Perhaps there were other children born between 1873 and the 1890s or perhaps Adeline and Stevenson were adopted, but there was no indication of this from the 1900 Pennsylvania soundex for Shreves. A George W. Shreve witnessed the will of George A. Shreve’s mother, Margaret (Miller) Shreve. He could have been a son of George and Janette Jamison Shreve. 105. MARTHA6 MATHILDA (called Tillie) SHREVE (Margaret5 Miller, Jane4 McFate, Jane3, John2, Unknown1); born July 1856 in Pennsylvania; married 1 November 1888 ALBERT (BURT) STEVENSON, born May 1859 in Pennsylvania.1165 In 1888, Martha and Albert's marriage license lists both Albert, reported as a farmer, and Tillie as living in Cherrytree Township, Venango County, Pennsylvania. The marriage license lists the parents of Albert Stevenson as William and Catherine Stevenson. In 1900 and 1910, Albert, Matilda and son Raymond were in Cherrytree Township, where Albert (enumerated as Bert in 1910) was enumerated as a farmer in 1900 (page 12A) and as a day laborer in 1910.
109. NANCY6 JANE WILSON (Jane5 Miller, Jane4 McFate, Jane3, John2, Unknown1); born circa 1857; married WILLIAM B. ROSE;1167 born circa 1861 in Pennsylvania. Frank graduated from Allegheny College with a degree in engineering.1169 Frank McFate was mainly responsible for the excellent McFate et al. (1982) genealogy, although at the time of publication in 1982, he was deceased. According to McFate et al. (1982), page 1: “This complication of the McFate family is based on a family tree chart, 16’’ x 22,’’ entitled ‘Genealogical Tree of the McFate Family from 16?? to 1889,’ which was drawn by Frank J. McFate ([#]359 in the genealogy) from the recollections of his mother Margaret (McFate) McFate (129) . . .” In 1900, Frank was still living with his parents in East Fairfield Township, Crawford County, Pennsylvania; in 1910, Frank, wife Margaret, and mother Margaret were still in East Fairfield Township, where Frank was enumerated as a farmer. The Pine Grove Township CulbertsonsI can not find a relationship between our Venango County Culbertsons and the Pine Grove Township Culbertsons. As mentioned in the section on Francis Culbertson’s children (see #29), the Pine Grove Township Culbertsons descend from a Robert Culbertson who descends from the “Culbertson Row Culbertsons” of Lancaster County, present–day Franklin County, Pennsylvania.1181 Robert was probably born circa 1760, went to Westmoreland County and eventually to Venango County, where he died.1182 The 1850 census for Pine Grove Township, Venango County,1183 pertains to Robert’s son, John Culbertson, born circa 1800, his wife Rebecca, born circa 1805 and their family. 1. ROBERT1CULBERTSON, born circa 1760.
2. JOHN2 CULBERTSON, born circa 1800 (circa 1808 according to the 1860 census for Pine Grove Township., Venango County.); married REBECCA [—?—], born circa 1807. According to Betty Stevens,1184 after marrying in Venango County, John and family moved to Butler County, Pennsylvania, to Clarion County, Pennsylvania, and back to Venango County, Pine Grove Township, by 1850.
4. DANIEL3 CULBERTSON, born circa 1832 in Butler County, Pennsylvania; married ELMINA [—?—].
9. JOHN3 S. CULBERTSON, born circa 1842; died 27 August 1908; married 15 June 1869 CHRISTINA SAGER, born circa 1843; died 27 February 1924 in Seneca, Cranberry Township, Venango County, Pennsylvania; buried in Brandon Cemetery, Cranberry Township. Christina's obituary appeared in the News Herald (Franklin) 28 February 1924. A query in the Venango County Genealogical Club Newsletter, Spring 1993 by W. A. Leonard, Jr. (R–1 Box 169, Fancy Gap, Virginia 24328) gives the marriage and death date of John S. Culbertson. In 1870, John, Cristie, and Ella were living in President Township.1187
Three additional children of John and Rebecca Culbertson listed by W. A. Leonard in the above query were Andrew E. Culbertson, Norman L. Culbertson and Anna M. Culbertson. An IGI item for Culbertsons of Pennsylvania lists Anna Mae Culbertson, born 17 December 1883, a daughter of John S. Culbertson of Seneca, (Cranberry Township) Venango County. There was also a Samuel Culbertson of Pine Grove Township who was deceased by 1855, as known from a petition of John Culbertson to appoint a guardian for John Culbertson and Jane Culbertson, minor children of Samuel Culbertson, deceased. John Culbertson was appointed guardian.1191 Possibly Samuel was a brother of the John Culbertson, born circa 1800 (above). Another mystery is the J. Culbertson of Pine Grove Township in the 1880 census1192 (assuming this census report is correct), born circa 1803 in Pennsylvania, wife (and so stated on census) Rebecca, born circa 1831, and children Ada B. Culbertson, born circa 1870 and Charles C. Culbertson, born circa 1874.
