1790-1840 CENSUS AGE CATEGORIES (except for 1790, pertaining here to "free white males and females").

1790: (1) free white males 16 and over, (2) free white males under 16, (3) free white females, (4) all other free persons, (5) slaves.

1800 and 1810 (males and females): (1) under 10, (2) 10 and under 16, (3) 16 and under 26, (4) 26 and under 45, (5) 45 and over.

1820 (males and females): (1) under 10, (2) 10 and under 16, (3) 16 and under 26, (4) 16 to 18 (males only),* (5) 26 and under 45, (6) 45 and over. *The extra category was for males, to determine the total manpower that could be called up in times of war. Besides confusing people interested in their ancestors, this category apparently confused census takers, resulting in many reports of (3) and (4) that are suspect.

1830-1840 (males and females): (1) under 5, (2) 5 and under 10, (3) 10 and under 15, (4) 15 and under 20, (5) 20 and under 30, (6) 30 and under 40, (7) 40 and under 50 (8) 50 and under 60 (9) 60 and under 70, (10) 70 and under 80, (11) 80 and under 90, (12) 90 and under 100, and (13) 100 and over.

The 1910 Miracode census is an index of the 1910 United States Federal Census, and is a modified version of the Soundex system. It is only available (2001) for the following states: Alabama, Arkansas, California, Florida, Georgia, Illinois, Kansas, Kentucky, Louisiana, Michigan, Mississippi, Missouri, North Carolina, Ohio, Oklahoma, Pennsylvania, South Carolina, Tennessee, Texas, Virginia, and West Virginia. The Miracode census index is available online for some, but not all (as of 2001), of these states from Ancestry.com.

1.
Valid documentation of this include the names of Hamilton and Francis McClintock being listed in the "George Power books" from 1794-1800 and in the "Patrons of Edward Hale," as compiled by his ledger, 1798-1800. Both lists are reported in Newton (1789), pages 120-121. Nathaniel Carey was also listed in both ledgers.
2.
My information on the early "non-Venango County" McClintocks is mainly second-hand, coming especially from Helene Rogers (Ridgewood, New Jersey) and Nancy Unlaub Anderson (Corpus Christi, Texas) and, through Nancy, the information of Myrtle Molyneaux and Joan Sullivan.

The 1820 and census for Allegheny Township, Venango County (page 8A) lists five females in Andrew Fleming's household. Three were under age 10; these would be Sarah Ann Fleming, Zibiah Fleming and Rachel Fleming. One female was 26 and under 45; this would be Ann (McClintock) Fleming (Andrew's wife-she was born in 1785); and one female 45 and over. This female probably would have been Ann (Carruthers) McClintock, widow of Hugh McClintock and mother of Ann (McClintock) Fleming. In 1830, Ann was apparently still living with Andrew, she being the one female between ages 70-80.

John was mentioned in his father's will, but not in the 18511and deed (see under Francis McClintock, Sr.).
101.
There is an 18321and deed between John L. (S. ?) McClintock and wife Lucinda of Allegheny Township and John Tennant (Tennent). John Tennent was the father of Jerusha Tennent, the third wife of James R. McClintock) of Deerfield Township, Warren County, instituted 1 December 1832, recorded 14 December 1832 (Venango County Deed Book E, page 404, FHL film 864541). There are 1835 deeds in which John and Lucinda first, in February 1835, sell land in Allegheny Township to John Brown of Allegheny Township (Venango County Deed Book F, page 333) and then in May 1835 buy land from John and Mary Ann Brown, (Deed Book G, page 160). A third deed, made 2 May 1835 and recorded 17 March 1836 (Deed Book G. page 158), has John and wife selling land to William D. Byles of Allegheny Township This land was "situated lying and being in the Townships of Allegheny and Deerfield, Venango County and Warren County," and was part of a larger track of the Holland Land Company land, no.155. The last deed I could find in the name of John and Lucinda McClintock (to A. Merrick) was instituted 1 July 1842, recorded 7 February 1865, again for 113 acres of land in Allegheny Township, Venango County, being part of Holland Land Company land, no.160 (Venango County Deed Book EE, instituted 1 July 1842, recorded 7 February 1865, FHL film 864558).

The Parshall family is mentioned in Newton (1879), p. 622; Schenck (1887), p. 458; and a GenServ report (, visited May 1999 ) (database ROBQ7GA) of Dave Robison (Concord, California). According to Schenck (1887), Samuel Parshall was a child of Samuel and Elizabeth Goutcher Parshall. The Parshalls were from Massachusetts. Samuel [Sr.] (died 1839 according to Schenck or 1827, in Ellsworth, Ohio, according to Dave Robison’s GenServ report) moved to Trumbull County, Ohio, where he married in 1806 Elizabeth Goutcher (1783-1865) (Goucher according to Dave Robison’s GenServ report), then to Erie County, Pennsylvania, to present-day Forest County, Pennsylvania, to Deerfield Township, Warren County, Pennsylvania. The account in Schenck (1887) has Samuel Parshall, Jr., marrying Lucy Henderson, but Schenck does not mention Samuel Parshall’s first wife, Zibiah Fleming; whereas Newton (1879), p. 622, has Samuel marrying in 1843 “a daughter of Andrew Fleming, deceased. ” In addition to Samuel (Jr.), other children of Samuel (Sr.) and Elizabeth (Goutcher) Parshall were John P. Parshall, born 1809, married Elsie McGuire (lived in Crawford County, Pennsylvania); Eliza Parshall, born 1812, married Robert Henry (lived in the Tidioute area, Warren County Pennsylvania); Nancy Parshall, born 1817, married Joseph Richardson (lived in Mercer County, Pennsylvania); Jennette Parshall, born 1822, married James Kinnear (lived in the Tidioute area; his biography is on p. lv of Schenck, 1887; he was a founder of a Tidioute bank); and James Parshall, married Henrietta Shugert (lived in Titusville). According to Warren County, Pennsylvania, Cemetery Records, 1750-1935 (FHL film 895183), Henrietta was born 1839; died 1881; married [—?—]; buried in the Shugert-Rogers Lot in the New Tidioute Cemetery, Deerfield Township, Warren County. Her will is in Crawford County Will Book E., p. 504, written 2 October 1881, recorded 1 March 1882; mentioned in the will are son Samuel H. Parshall and daughter Maude Parshall. On p. 91 of Giddens (1948) there is a picture of the Parshall House in Titusville, “built by the wealthy James Parshall,” opened in 1870. Could this James be the husband of Henrietta Shugert? George Stranahan Parshall, another son of Samuel and Elizabeth Parshall, was not mentioned in Newton (1879), and Schenck (1887).

Names and dates from the 1850 federal census for Cornplanter Township, dwelling 38, family 38, at which time Joseph was living with his second wife, Elizabeth (Culbertson) Anderson, and children, presumable of both his wives. Those of Isabella are based on Isabella's marriage date and death date, and are therefore tentative. One of the two remaining children of the 1850 census, unnamed male Anderson, born circa 1849 [he is listed as James Anderson in Culbertson (1923), page 425], would be a son of Joseph and Elizabeth. The other child was Thomas Anderson, born circa 1846. He was a son of either Isabella or Elizabeth. Since Culbertson (1923), page 425, lists him [Thomas Alexander Anderson] as a son of Joseph and Elizabeth, I treated Thomas Alexander as a son of Elizabeth.

Titusville Herald, 24 August 1959, "Family Kin To Steeles," by H. W. Strawbridge; copied from internet: PACRAWFORD rootsweb.com, 23 June 1998. Sarah McKnight Culbertsons also had brothers Andrew McKnight (married Nancy McDill), Thomas McKnight (did not marry), Daniel McKnight (died at age 22), and sisters Rebecca McKnight, Mary Ann McKnight and Margaret McKnight. Margaret was not mentioned in the Herald article. Asbury (1942), page 119, mentions David Hayes [Hays], a nephew of Sarah McKnight McClintock. This would mean either Mary Ann or Rebecca married a Hays. Newton (1879), page 611; and McFate et al. (1982), page 72, resolve this by reporting Moses Ward (born 1835) married Mary J. Hays, a daughter of Robert and Mary Ann (McKnight) Hays. According to Bell (1890), page 687, a Rebecca McKnight, Jane Hays and Mary Ann Hays were early members of the Oakland United Presbyterian Church, Oakland Page There was a Margaret McKnight, born Northern Ireland 1806, died 1884 in Cochranton, Crawford County, Pennsylvania, who married Joseph McFate (see #43 "Notes on McFates") According to McFate et al. (1982), page 67, Margaret McKnight was a daughter of David and Mary (Williams) McKnight. Sarah (McKnight) McClintock willed $100 dollars to a Rachel McKnight. According to the 1959 Titusville Herald article, this Rachel was a cousin of Sarah's, apparently descending from an unnamed brother of David McKnight.

Elizabeth McClintock's first husband has been variously reported as a McClelland or a McLane, and that Elizabeth had two McLane daughters besides having a McClelland child. The confusion is due in part to the format of the 1850 census item for Elizabeth (McClintock) McClelland and in part to two of Elizabeth's daughters apparently marrying two McLanes. In 1850, Elizabeth, a widow, was living with her parents in Cornplanter Township (1850 federal census, dwelling 3, family 3): Hamilton McClintock, Sr., 79; Mary McClintock, 76: Hamilton McClintock, Jr., 30; Eliz McClelland, 32; Mary -, 28; Emeline -, 7; William -, 5; Lewis -, 2; Mary -, 1. The census item format might even suggest that Mary, age 28, was a McClelland and the children were McClellands. This Mary was Mary (Jack) McClintock, wife of Hamilton, Jr., and the first three children listed were their children. Only Mary (age 1) was a McClelland; the 1860 census for James and Elizabeth (McClintock) Tarr lists this Mary (as a Tarr!) born circa 1847, which was 4 years before James and Elizabeth were married. Also listed in the 1860 federal census for Cornplanter Township, dwelling 421, family 410, were Anna Tarr, born circa 1853 (she therefore could not be a child bya McClelland or McLane); Nannie Tarr, born circa 1854; Sarah Tarr, born circa 1856 and John Tarr, born circa 1858.
227.
Death date is based on birth of his child, Mary A., and Francis McClelland's wife, Elizabeth, being a widow by the time of the 1850 census for Cornplanter Township, dwelling 3, family 3.

In most documents pertaining to James Tarr, there is no middle initial for his name. On the border of his picture appearing in McLaurin (1902), page 292, his name is printed James S. Tarr and the Greendale Cemetery record also lists "S." as his middle initial. However an important 1860 land deed (see below clearly shows an "L" (in two places), identical to the "L" in "Land" of the same deed as opposed to the "S" of "Samuel" or "States" of the same deed. Perhaps the clerk who copied the original document mistook the "S" for an "L."

Although John and Mary are common names, these would appear to be the John Tarr and Mary Tarr buried in the Tarr Cemetery, located off Township Road #595 in Cornplanter Township, Venango County. John's stone indicates he died 28 July 1885, 96y. Mary stone's indicates she died 31 October 1883, 91y, 3m, 15d (born 16 July 1792). The cemetery is on the old George Tarr farm, Cornplanter Township George, died 3 Apri11847, 78y, 6m, 9d, was John's father. George's wife, also buried in the Tarr Cemetery, was Barbara Tarr, died 7 May 1847, 72y (24 September 1769). George Tarr's will is in Venango County, Pennsylvania, Will Book 2, pages 631-634, written 24 December 1832, recorded 27 Apri11845. In his will, George mentions his wife Barbara, sons John and John's wife Mary and John and Mary's children: George, John James, Sara? , Martin. The will also mentions apparently George and Barbara's daughters: Barbara, Amelia and Jane (or perhaps they were daughters of John and Mary, but if so were not enumerated with their parents in 1850). Also mentioned is George's "fifth" son George, "being the youngest son." Other sons of George mentioned in his will were Matthew and Jacob and daughter Elizabeth Turner. According to a November 19981etter from Mike Tarr (Raytown, Missouri), George, Jr., (who was Mike Tarr's direct ancestor) married Lydia Lamey. I suspect this Lydia Lamey was a sister of John and Levi Lamey, who married McClintock sisters, Maria McClintock (#117) and Lydia McClintock (#121).

There is a deed recorded 13 October 1864 in which James and Elizabeth M. Tarr sold land in Cornplanter Township to a George Miller (Venango County Deed Book GG, page number is blurred, instituted 6 March 1860, recorded 13 October 1864) (FHL film 864560). The deed states that the 31 acres sold to George Miller for $135 dollars was part of a larger tract of William Story and his wife Margaret that was conveyed to Elizabeth M. Tarr. This would seem to be part of the 195 acre tract described above in the 1860 deed instituted 3 April 1860 and recorded 9 June 1860. What is puzzling is that the George Miller deed was instituted 6 March 1860, about a month before the land was conveyed to Elizabeth M. Tarr (and James Tarr). It was as if George Miller paid $135 dollars to the Tarrs; and the next month, perhaps in part with this $135, the Tarrs paid the $200 to the Storys for the 195 acre tract, with 31 acres of it going to George Miller. Incidentally, the deed's description of the 31 acres indicates that this George Miller owned other land bordering the 31 acres.

Another early Folwell of Venango County was George Folwell, born circa 1802 (Newton, 1879, page 614, reports him born 1811 in New York State), died 1867, buried in Dempseytown Cemetery, Oakland Township, Venango County, Pennsylvania. In 1850, George was enumerated in Oakland Township (dwelling 114, family 116), with Martha, born circa 1807, and the following children: (1) Fanny Folwell, born circa 1830 (married a Monroe, re George's will); (2) Joseph Folwell, born 19 June 1830, died 1913, buried in Dempseytown Cemetery; married 10 September 1854 Rebecca Jane Gillespie (her name from Newton, 1879, page 614) who was born 1829, died 1903, buried in Dempseytown Cemetery (this Joseph was apparently the Joseph, age 46, with Jane, age 46, enumerated in 1880 in Oakland Township, Venango County, dwelling 62, family 62, although the dates do not agree with Newton's). Their children were Homer, age 13, Emma age 13, William, age 10, and Martha, age 7; (3) Martha Folwell, born circa 1834, died 1910, buried in Dempseytown Cemetery; and (4) William Folwell, born circa 1834. George probably was a brother of John Folwell who married Nancy Shellmier. George and Martha Folwell were still in Oakland Township in 1852, when they sold land to Robert Crawford and Robert Neely (Venango County Deed Book N, page 36, instituted 15 May 1852, recorded 30 January 1854) (FHL film 864546). Witnesses were James Haslett and Fanny Folwell. George Folwells (of Oakland Township) will was written 19 March 1867, recorded 6 April 1867 (Venango County Will Book 4, page 84, FHL film 857351). The will mentions George's wife Elizabeth (apparently a second wife), and children Joseph Folwell, William Folwell, Martha Folwell and Fanny Monroe.

Descendants of James and Mary Folwell McClintock can trace their ancestors back to Chretien Du Bois, a Huguenot of Wieres in La Bassee, near Lillie in Flanders. According to Jordan (1913), pages 675-676, Chretien Du Bois's daughter Francoise married in 1649 Pierre Boileau, and one of their descendants was Anne Boileau, born 9 February 1751, died 3 July 1829, who married Mary Folwell McClintock's grandfather Captain Joseph Folwell, born 14 September 1748, died 3 Apri11824. Joseph Folwell's parents were William and Mary (Potts) Folwell, and William's parents were Nathan and Sarah [-?-1 Folwell.

There was also a Hamilton Fleming, born circa 1837, of Fairfield Township, Crawford County, Pennsylvania. In 1850, this Hamilton Fleming was enumerated in John and Mary Yost’s household in Fairfield Township. John Yost was a cooper born in Germany. Also in this household a Rachel Fleming, born circa 1842 and William Fleming, born circa 1845. Also in Fairfield Township, Crawford County, there were other early Flemings of this apparently German line.

In summary, there were several connections, albeit tentative, between the Rosses/Greens and our McClintocks: (1 ). Mary Jane McClintock, daughter of James and Louisa (Reynolds) McClintock, married Thomas Green Ross, a son of James and Susan (Green) Ross. (2). Hugh H. McClintock, a son of Francis and Rachel (Hardy) McClintock, married Mary E. probably Ross, a daughter of James and Susan (Green) Ross. (3). Hamilton McClintock, also a son of Francis and Rachel McClintock, married Priscilla who was probably either a daughter of James and Susan (Green) Ross or a daughter of Susan Green by a previous marriage. (4). Francis McClintock, another son of Francis and Rachel (Hardy) McClintock, married Sarah Anna, who also was probably either a daughter of James and Susan (Green) Ross or a daughter of Susan Green by a previous marriage. (5). In Francis and Priscilla McClintock's household in 1850 were Thomas Green, born circa 1843, and William Green, born circa 1848. (6). In 1850 a James R. McClintock, age 15, was in the household of Thomas Green, Susan Green and Richard Green, in Cherrytree Township

One possible solution, with no supporting evidence, would be that William and Harriet named a child, perhaps their first born child, William and he died, re stone in Cherry Tree Cemetery. Then William and second wife Elizabeth also named their first born child William, but he was enumerated as Roscoe in the 1870 census (or he eventually went by the name William).
