Rogers (1995), states: "James D.
Steele, a well known hotel proprietor, formerly of this city, died in
Oil City in the 30th, ult., age 56 years. Mr.
Steele's remains were interred in the old cemetery this city. [The
Franklin Pioneer Cemetery]. " David Steele
operated the Rural House Hotel in Franklin, Pennsylvania. Maria Foulk
(Permelia and Johnny's mother)
was born 5 May 1819 in Clearfield County, Pennsylvania; her parents
were George Henry Foulk and wife.
Maria Foulk eventually married David Amon. They lived in Mercer County,
Pennsylvania. When Mr. Amon
died in 1893, his obituary said he was the stepfather of "Coal Oil
Johnny."
