Two other early McClintock families of Venango County

Alexander McClintock of Franklin

There was another early Alexander McClintock (born 1825; died 1874) in Venango County, the Franklin area. I have not been able to associate this Alexander McClintock with our McClintocks. In 1870, this Alexander, a shoemaker, was enumerated with his family in Franklin, Venango County.810 Several obituaries in Franklin papers give additional information on this family.

1. ALEXANDER1 MCCLINTOCK born circa 1825 in Pennsylvania; died 20 January 1874 in Franklin (see his obituary); married Rosabelle Hoover,811 born circa 1831 in Pennsylvania,812 interred 26 March 1898 in the Franklin Cemetery.813 In 1870, Alexander,814 Rosa and family (Mary, age 19; George, age 14; Rose Bell, age 9; Simeon, age 5; and Arnold, age 3) were enumerated in Franklin. In 1880, Rosabelle and family were enumerated living on Elk Street, Franklin, Pennsylvania.815

From Franklin (Pennsylvania) Public Library, obituary abstracts, Venango Spectator (Franklin), 22 January, 1874:
MCCLINTOCK, Alexander, died in this city, January 20, 1874, age 49 years and 13 days. (Clearfield and Mifflin papers please copy.)

Known children of Alexander and Rosabelle (Hoover) McClintock, order of birth is tentative:816

2 i. Jennie2 (Sarah?) McClintock, born circa 1850. In 1880, Sarah McClintock was enumerated with her parents in Franklin. This is the only mention of a Sarah for this family, and I assume she was also called Jennie. She is possibly the J? [the handwriting looked liked Jerusha to me] McClintock, interred 15 May 1897 in the plot (27–J), Franklin Cemetery, where her mother and some of her siblings are known to be buried.817

From Franklin (Pennsylvania) Public Library, obituary abstracts, no date or press listed:
MCCLINTOCK, Miss Jennie, eldest daughter of Mrs. RH McClintock died at mother’s home on 8th between Liberty and Elk Thursday. Member of 1st Pres. Church. Leaves mother and siblings: Miss Mary, Simeon E., George H. and Miss Daisey, Franklin, Mrs. Burton Mays, Magnetic Springs, OH.

3 ii. Mary W. McClintock; born March 1853; died 10 October 1933; buried in Franklin, Pennsylvania, Cemetery.818 In 1900 and 1910, Mary was living with her sister Daisy and brother Carl in Franklin, Pennsylvania.819

From Franklin (Pennsylvania) Public Library, obituary abstracts, Venango Citizen's Press (Franklin), 18 October 1933, page 5:
MCCLINTOCK, Miss Mary, died Tuesday at her home on 8th St., daughter of the late Alexander and Rosabelle Hoover McClintock. Survived by two brothers, George H., Healdton, OK, Carl B., Lakewood, Ohio; two sisters, Mrs. D. B. May, Urbana, OH; and Miss Daisy, at home.

4 iii. Thomas Ross McClintock; born 1854; died 1855.

From Franklin (Pennsylvania) Public Library, obituary abstracts, Venango Spectator (Franklin), 22 August 1855:
MCCLINTOCK, obituary. Thomas Ross, age 1, son of Alexander and Rosabella McClintock.
+ 5 iv. George H. McClintock; born 1 August 1858; died 6 November 1936; married [—?—].

6 v. Rosabelle McClintock; born circa 1861; married D. Burton Mays, lived in Urbana, Ohio.820
+ 7 vi. Simeon E. McClintock; born circa 1866; died 10 March 1916; buried in Franklin, Pennsylvania, Cemetery; married 22 October 1889 Mary (Mollie) Emily Stroup.

8 vii. Mary McClintock; born circa 1867. Arnold was enumerated in the 1870 census for Franklin, Crawford County, but no additional records; probably died young. Possibly Arnold and Carl were the same person, but the census dates would not indicate this.

9 viii. Carl B. McClintock; born September 1870; lived in Lakewood, Oklahoma. In 1900 Carl was living with sisters Mary and Daisy in Franklin, Pennsylvania.821

10 ix. Daisy McClintock; born September 1872; died 21 February 1936; buried in Franklin, Pennsylvania, Cemetery.822 In 1900 she was living with sisters Mary and brother Carl in Franklin, Pennsylvania.823 Her will is in Venango Will Book 18, page 304. The only heir listed in the Index was a Wayne Scannell.824
There is a picture of a women’s basketball team including a Daisy McClintock on page 130 of Venango County Panorama. A Pictorial History of Venango County, Pennsylvania. No date or location was given, but would appear to be of the early twentieth century. Since I have no information on a Daisy McClintock of our McClintocks, the Daisy in the photograph could_ be the daughter of Alexander and Rosabelle.
From Franklin (Pennsylvania) Public Library, obituary abstracts, Venango Citizen's Press (Franklin), 26 February 1936, page 3:
MCCLINTOCK, Daisy, Miss, lifelong Franklin residence, died at home 310 8th St., Friday. Daughter of the late Alexander and Rosa Belle Hoover McClintock. Retired from the post office 3 years ago. Siblings: Mrs. DB May, Urbana, OH, George of Duncan, OK; Carl B. Lakewood, OH. Sister Miss Mary died 2 years ago.

Generation Two

5. GEORGE2 MCCLINTOCK; born 1 August 1858; died 6 November 1936; married [—?—].

From Franklin (Pennsylvania) Public Library, obituary abstracts, Venango Citizen's Press (Franklin), 18 November 1936, page 5:

Brother of Miss Daisy, for many years an employee of the post office. . Survived by wife and son Glenn and daughter Austa of Duncan. Sister Mrs. DB May, Urbana, OH. In Franklin, he lived at 310 8th.

12 ii. Austa McClintock.

13 iii. Glenn McClintock.

7. SIMEON2 E. MCCLINTOCK, born circa 1866; died 10 March 1916; buried in Franklin, Pennsylvania, Cemetery;825 married 22 October 1889 MARY (MOLLIE) EMILY STROUP, born circa 1866,826 died 18 September 1948; buried in Franklin Cemetery.827 Simeon and Mary’s marriage license application lists Mollie’s parents as Daniel and Harriet Stroup and Mollie’s residence as Franklin.

From Franklin (Pennsylvania) Public Library, obituary abstracts, Venango Citizen's Press (Franklin), 29 March 1916:
MCCLINTOCK, Simeon M., 50, died today as a result of an accident at the Eclipse [an oil refinery near Franklin]. Son of Alexander McClintock, born in Franklin. Leaves wife who was Mollie Stroup, 11 children. Siblings George, Cairo WV, Mrs. DR Lay [sic], Urbana, OH, Mary, Daisy, Carl, Franklin.

According to Simeon’s obituary, Simeon and Mollie had eleven children. But the names listed in the obituary of son Franklin and other documents do not match with those of the 1910 soundex for McClintocks of Pennsylvania.828 The children of the 1910 soundex were William, age 20; Mildred, age 18; Irene, age 17; Ruth O., age 15; Morgan (male), age 11; Plummer, age 10; Helen E., age 8; Paul, age 5; Florence, age 4; and Myland W., age 1.

The names of the following children were extracted from the obituary of Franklin McClintock and other documents:

14 i. Maggie3 McClintock; born circa 1895; died 11 November 1897; buried in Franklin Cemetery.829 The Venango County, Pennsylvania, Registry of Deaths, 1893–1903,830 lists Maggie McClintock, born circa 1895; died at 20 months 11 November 1897 in Franklin of lung fever; daughter of Sim and Mollie McClintock.

15 ii. Benjamin Franklin McClintock; born 7 March 1900; died 17 January 1980; apparently did not marry.

From Franklin (Pennsylvania) Public Library, obituary abstracts, press not indicated, 5 May 1980:

Charles Wilson (C. W.) McClintock of Oil City

Another McClintock family often encountered when researching Venango County McClintocks was that of Charles Wilson (usually listed as C. W.) McClintock of Oil City. I can not connect this McClintock family with our McClintocks.

Generation One

1. CHARLES1 WILSON MCCLINTOCK, born 29 September 1829; died 30 November 1910.832 Charles W. McClintock descended from Philadelphia Quaker McClintocks. Apparently C. W., as he was called, moved to Tidioute (Warren County) and then to Oil City. He married MARGARET ELIZABETH TYLER, born circa 1836 in New York state,833 and had four children.834 I believe she was the Mrs. Margaret McClintock, of Seneca Falls, New York, who died 10 October 1899 at age 63 years and 10 months in Oil City and whose place of residence was given as Seneca Falls, New York.835

The Venango Citizen's Press (Franklin), 8 December 1910, reported the death of Charles W. McClintock of Oil City. stating he was a descendant of the Old Friends Families of Philadelphia and a Civil War veteran, born 29 September 1829 in Philadelphia, survived by two children. In 1870, Charles and Margaret and children Fanny and Charles were enumerated in Tidioute, Deerfield Township, Warren County. Charles was listed as an editor.836

Children of C. W. and Elizabeth (Tyler) McClintock, not necessarily in order of birth:837

2 i. Fannie2 McClintock; Fannie2 McClintock, born May 1860,838 died 16 April 1912;839 lived in Oil City.
+ 3 ii. Charles Tyler McClintock; born March 1863 in Pennsylvania; married Marion Boughton.

4 iii. died in infancy .

5 iv. died in infancy .

Generation Two

3. CHARLES2 TYLER MCCLINTOCK (Charles1), born March 1863 in Pennsylvania; married 1891 MARION BOUGHTON,840 born September 1868 in Virginia.841

Children of Charles Tyler and Marion Boughton McClintock:842 (1) Gladys3 Eaton McClintock, born May 1892, married Hopewell Phinney; (2) Tyler Boughton McClintock; died in infancy; (3) Charles Boughton McClintock, born February 1897, married Doris Whitslar. Doris Whitslar McClintock (Mrs. Charles Boughton [McClintock]) of Oil City; died 29 April 1969.843 Her will is in Venango County Will Book 57, page 10.

Perhaps related to this Oil City family is T. A. McClintock of Oil City, born April 1857 in Pennsylvania; enumerated in 1900 in Oil City with one servant.844
